Kinston is fortunate to be home to Ellis Planetarium, a local favorite. This planetarium offers an incredible way to see the vastness of the solar system, galaxy, and outer space. In addition, it is family-friendly and will delight both the young and old. Make plans to stop by and visit this fun place and learn more about the night sky.

What to Know Before You Go

If you’ve never been to Ellis Planetarium, then it’s time to make plans. And enjoying the amazing views couldn’t be easier. In fact, Ellis Planetarium is open all year round, with the exception of certain days. In addition, admission is free, so a visit fits everyone’s budget. You can visit Tuesday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. On Sundays, the planetarium is open from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., and on Mondays, it is closed.

Upgraded Star Views

The planetarium recently upgraded from the previous projector to a new dome full of tons of detail. And with 60 seats, your whole group can join others. There’s plenty of room for getting an up-close view of bright planets, comets, and more. In addition, you can visit often and always see new things since Ellis Planetarium updates the show topics each month. To catch a cool show, go to the dome at 2:00 p.m. or 4:00 p.m. On Saturdays, there’s an extra show available at noon. Finally, while the planetarium is free, the show costs $1 for anyone over the age of three.

In addition to the regular shows, groups can schedule private shows. If groups want to do this option, they must call ahead first, and admission for a private show is $1.50. Private shows are a fun birthday or celebration idea. But the planetarium also hosts many other types of events. For instance, sometimes there are video game nights, movie nights, laser shows, and more. There are always tons of fun events happening there.

A Planetarium and More

The planetarium offers a wonderful way to explore the night sky during the day. But there’s more than the stars to see when you visit. The planetarium is part of the Neuseway Nature Center, so you can fill the day with tons of interactive exhibits. In addition to the planetarium, visit the Health & Science Museum part of the building. Then, get outside and play on the playground, and see the mini railroad.
