Kinston’s own Minor League baseball team, the Down East Wood Ducks, are putting forth their best efforts for 2019. While the season is now underway, you have plenty of opportunities to catch the Wood Ducks at home this summer.
The Season So Far
The Wood Ducks have done well this season within the Carolina League South. In fact, seven team members were named mid-season league all-stars earlier this month. The team has maintained a decidedly positive win/loss ratio through 2019, doing their best against contenders like the Frederick Keys and Lynchburg Hillcats.
The Down East Wood Ducks
The Wood Ducks played their first season in Kinston in 2017, and built some serious momentum right off the bat. After besting the Myrtle Beach Pelicans that year, they were declared co-champions of the Carolina League. Now, the Wood Ducks are a Class-A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers. By the end of last year’s season, they’ve sent eight players into the Major League.
Grainger Stadium
When the Wood Ducks host home games, they welcome guests to Grainger Stadium, which has been the home of Kinston teams since 1949. The field is located at 400 East Grainger Avenue, Kinston, North Carolina 28501. The Wood Ducks joined the Carolina League in 2017, and the stadium received some timely renovations that same year. It now sports a grandstand, fresh lighting, a new parking lot, and updated turf.
The Wood Ducks are the latest professional team to call Grainger Stadium home, as Kinston has a long history of minor league games. Before their exit several years ago, the Kinston Indians hosted visitors there. Last year, the Wood Ducks sported Indian uniforms for “Throwback Thursday” events.
