Summer Hiking Tips

Man hiking trails

The sun is out and calling your name! Enjoy a day outside when you lace up your hiking boots and head to your favorite hiking spot. Your number one goal is to make sure you have a fun and safe trip in the hot sun. Take a look at some ways you can make the most of your summer hike while staying cool and safe in the summer heat.

When to Hike

Thinking about when and where you are going to hike are two very important and needed steps when planning your adventure. Did you know it can take 10 to 14 days to get used to high heat temperatures? With that being said, getting used to the heat is a must before you go for a summer hike. Noon to 3:oo pm is typically the hottest time of the day. Plan your trip around these times so you can enjoy it without being too hot.

Where to hike

Find a shady hiking spot. You will be glad you did! You can also hike near the water. The breeze near an open body of water is a hard feeling to beat. Not to mention, swimming is a great way to cool off.

Clothing and Gear

Stay away from dark clothes. Wearing light colors that reflect the sun’s rays will help you stay cool. Shirts, shorts, and pants in a white or a light color are the way to go for hiking clothes. Hats, bandanas, sun-protective neck gaiters, wool socks, and water bottles are a must-have on a summer hiking trip.
