It’s Named For a Revolutionary War Hero
Lenoir County was named after William Lenoir – a farmer, entrepreneur, politician, justice, and military general. He led troops through multiple campaigns during the Revolutionary War, including the Battle of Kings Mountain – a key battle fought in South Carolina that served as a major turning point for the Patriots. He was elected to the North Carolina House of Commons in 1781, and to the state senate in 1784. Aside from politics and the military, Lenoir was a successful businessman during his time, especially as a planter entrepreneur. He was also one of the original trustees of the University of North Carolina. He was married to his wife, Anne, for 63 years and had nine children. In 1839, he passed away at the age of 88.

It’s Home to the Smallest City With A Pro Baseball Team
Kinston, North Carolina – the county seat of Lenoir – was once home to the Kinston Indians, a Minor League Baseball team. This made Kinston the smallest city in the country with a professional baseball team. After their final season in 2011, the team was moved to Nebulon, North Carolina and was renamed the Carolina Mudcats (after a previous team that shared the same name).
