If your car is about five years old or is coming up on 60,000 miles, there are a few things you need to have done to ensure that you can put another 60,000 or more miles on it. Though the list will vary from car to car, these tips will get you headed in the right direction!
Battery
Most batteries last about four to five years, which means you’ll need a new one around the 50,000 – 60,000-mile mark. Signs that your battery is dying include slow start-up or slow starts sometimes but not others.
Brake Fluid, Pads, Shoes, Rotors
Around the 60,000-mile mark, you can expect to need some work on your braking system. At the very least, you’ll probably need a brake fluid flush and new brake pads/shoes. You may also need new rotors. Depending on the shape your rotors are in, you might be able to have them resurfaced to buy a little more time (and save more money) before you need a full replacement.
Coolant
Coolant flows through your radiator to keep the engine from overheating, which can cause some pricey damage. To ensure that the coolant never drops below the appropriate levels, you’ll want to check it every so often, and plan to replace it around the 60,000-mile point if you haven’t already.
Transmission Fluid
Low transmission fluid can cause a lot of issues because transmission fluid ensures that the transmission is shifting smoothly and easily. If your vehicle has a transmission fluid dipstick (it will usually be towards the back of the engine bay), you should check it around 60,000 miles to see what shape it’s in. Healthy transmission fluid will be pink and have a slightly sweet smell. Bad transmission fluid will be discolored – usually dark red or brown – and smell burnt. If your car doesn’t have a transmission fluid dipstick, dirty or low transmission fluid will usually trigger the “check engine” light.
